Nye on Tour with Boston
Tom Scholz, the lead guitarist and founder of the band Boston was preparing for two shows at Humphreys by the Bay, a San Diego outdoor concert venue. During his shows, Tom uses a pedal board with his guitar to achieve certain sounds. This device requires an oil for the slide pedal between the chamois and aluminum sliding surfaces. Tom needed a blend of the oils to get a certain viscous drag, or a certain feel in his pedal device. Boston’s technician contacted Nye’s office in California, asking for quarts of Methyl Silicone for Tom’s pedal.
Typically, the lead time for this built-to-order product is a few weeks, but Tom needed the product immediately. Nye went straight to work on getting the technician a sample as soon as possible for the upcoming shows. Within a few days, samples of a high viscosity and a medium viscosity oil were sent to the band’s hotel. After testing the samples out, Tom approved and went on to perform that weekend in San Diego using NYE M-Sil.
Tom Scholz is not just a rock star, but also a mechanical engineer. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from MIT in just 5 years. Tom has always been a tinkerer and a typical engineer, and he currently has nearly 3 dozen patents to his name. Tom’s history in engineering has led to the invention of his own line of amplifiers and special effects devices. The pedal board that now uses a Nye oil is one of his very own inventions.
Today, the Nye product continues to prove successful for Tom as Boston’s technician said, “Tom is very, very happy with the operation using NYE M-Sil on his "signature" "one of a kind" pedal.” Thanks to the quick efforts made by the entire Nye team, our product is now touring with a rock star!
